What is a crime?
A crime is doing something that is against the law. Committing a crime is very serious and it can lead to a court case, or in some cases, a prison sentence.
How do I know what is against the law?
It's not always easy to know if something is against the law or not. If you are unsure of what is, you should ask a parent or teacher for help.
Some examples of things that are against the law are:
- Stealing
- Carrying a knife or other weapon
- Physically hurting or attacking someone
- Taking drugs which are not for a medical condition
- Smoking when you are under 16 years old
- Driving a car without a license
What do I do if someone is trying to make me break the law?
If someone is pressuring you into breaking the law or getting involved in a crime, you can tell someone about it. You could talk to your parent, teacher or the police. If you feel that you can't talk to any of these people about it, you can call ChildLine who will be able to help you.
What if someone I know is breaking the law?

No one has the right to hurt you or put you in danger. If someone has committed a crime against you, you can tell someone about it.
